The New Postpartum

Postpartum marks one of the most radical shifts in a woman's lifetime, yet new parents are often left to navigate these changes alone. While childbirth classes are common, most women receive limited postpartum education and only visit their OB/GYN once after labor. It's no wonder postpartum health issues are so widespread. At Gather, we’ve imagined a new postpartum that empowers mothers to act preventatively in support of their bodies and minds. To do this, we’ve evaluated postpartum research, identified the areas of care that matter most to your health, and sought out the world’s leading experts in each of these fields. Throughout this course, our team will equip you with essential knowledge to enhance your physical health, nurture your infant, and flourish emotionally.

The Curriculum

From April 23rd to May 31st, you will join live sessions with leading experts twice a week. You can find our schedule here. If you’re unable to attend a session, you can watch a recording. Plus, you’ll join an inclusive community space and connect with a postpartum doula and psychologists specializing in women’s health.

  • Support your metabolic health with guidance from chef and nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo. In this session, you’ll learn about the relationship between the gut microbiome and mental health and explore foods that strengthen both.

  • The 48-hours following childbirth marks the single largest hormone shift a woman will experience in her lifetime. Led by endocrinologist Dr. Caroline Nguyen, this session will teach you about the key hormones implicated during postpartum, the changes you can anticipate within the first year, and the strategies you can use to address any complications.

  • 67% of couples experience a profound decrease in relationship satisfaction following the birth of their first child. With the help of Gather co-founder Bridget Freihart, this session will help you learn practical skills to improve relational and sexual wellbeing while transitioning to parenthood with your partner.

  • Postpartum depression is the single most common complication associated with pregnancy. Led by perinatal and postpartum mental health specialist Dr. Ashurina Ream, this session will help you navigate your feelings and sense of identity throughout the ever-changing journey of motherhood.

  • While 60% of women develop a pelvic floor disorder after giving birth, research suggests that many of these complications may be preventable. Women’s health and pelvic floor therapist Dr. Sara Reardon will use this session to help you prevent and address common pelvic concerns in order to relieve pain, improve your sex life, and support your recovery.

  • The nervous system plays a crucial role in postpartum health, impacting areas like recovery, immunity, sleep, and emotional health. Dr. Maytal Eyal, Gather co-founder and a psychologist specializing in the mind-body connection, will teach you about your nervous system and explore several exercises that allow for its regulation.

  • Emily Oster became an internationally known figure in pregnancy and parenting by helping people leverage data to make decisions that work for their families. During this session, Emily will answer your burning questions about early parenthood in an intimate fireside chat.

  • Learning to care for your baby is one of the biggest challenges of the postpartum experience. During this course, celebrity doula Brandi Jordan will lead three 90-minute support sessions focused on infant sleeping, feeding, and soothing.

  • Throughout this course, you’ll have access to several community forums moderated by psychologists specializing in women’s health. There, you’ll find individualized, science-backed answers to your biggest questions. You’ll also join a supportive community comprised of women at a similar stage of their motherhood journey.
